In 1955, a group of Christian educators, Rev. James R.Graham and Mr.Ching Yu Chang, considering the nation’s progress towards industrial and economic development, felt the need to establish a Christian-oriented institute of higher learning in science and engineering to train young men and women and to advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ among them. On October 15, 1955, Chung Yuan Christian College of Science and Engineering (CYCC) was founded with an enrollment of only 220 students and four departments. In the past decades, CYCC has added 20 departments and 16 graduate programs. Additionally to meet the nation’s business boom, the school established a College of Business to train young people in trade and management. On August 1, 1980, CYCC was formally upgraded by the Ministry of Enducation to the status of a full university known as Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU). Today, with over 13,000 students and 1313 faculty and staff members, the University has grown trementously both in school population and academic achievement. There are now over 50,000 graduates living in Taiwan and abroad. Many of them have actively contributed their knowledge and skills to construction plans in this country. In 40 years, this institution, CYCU, has been under the leadership of five presidents: Presidents Kuo, Shieh, Han, Yuan, and Yin. Each one of them has substantially contributed to the progress and growth of Christian institutions of higher learning in Taiwan. Under President Kuo’s administration basic land and building structures were laid. Under President Shieh’s 13-year tenure, several departments were added, new buildings were built, and the school property was expanded. Under President Han’s administration, more progress was made in faculty quality; a missionary-teacher program was initiated to attract doctorate-holding Christian faculty members from abroad; faculty residential facilities were built. President Yuan held office for seven years and worked diligently to make the campus more beautiful. He added numbers facilities. When Chung Yuan was acknowledged as a full university by the goverment in August 1980, the board of directors appointed President Yuan as its first president. During President Yin’s nine-year administration, he endeavored to enhance international academic exchanges and cooperation. During those years, CYCU established sisterhood with universities in the U.S. as well as in the Philippines. Furthermore, President Yin made strenuous efforts not only in expanding undergraduate and graduate programs, but also in completing many projects and buildings on campus. President Samuel K.C. Chang, continues to build on both the physical and the intellectual foundation already laid down; more devoted and learned teachers are being recruited; the campus is further enlarged and beautified; and more buildings and facilities are added. All this is making the University a more comprehensive source of higher education for Chinese youth.
CYCU is standing tall as a witness to God’s goodness and faithfulness. Truly, the Lord has crowned these years with His sovereign grace and care, and we are ready with full confidence that He will guide and bless us as we move toward the goal of being among the very best higher educational institutions in Taiwan.
