Being honored once again as an Outstanding Teacher in Service-Learning fills my heart with gratitude and reflection. Looking back at the reflection essay I wrote when I received this award three years ago, I am struck by how dramatically the world has changed under the influence of AI. These past three years have also coincided with the launch of our university’s Metaverse initiative, which inspired me to shift my service-learning projects from design-focused services toward more diverse and innovative directions.

In addition to serving as a co-principal investigator for the USR Hub project and guiding students beyond the classroom to apply design thinking in social practice, we visited local cultural historians in Taoyuan’s Sanchashui, Longtan, Sankeng, and the Daxi. Through their guidance, we immersed ourselves in local communities, conducting in-depth interviews and culturally grounded field research. Together, we captured immersive 360-degree imagery and integrated community highlights with local cultural knowledge to create highly interactive and engaging VR community tours.

Technology, after all, exists to serve humanity. Throughout this journey, I have gained invaluable insights and come to appreciate more deeply the profound connections among teaching, students, and local communities. My heartfelt thanks go to our partner communities and local organizations for opening their doors and providing meaningful real-world learning opportunities for both faculty and students. I am equally grateful to the Service-Learning Center team for their unwavering support—from funding to administrative assistance—which has enabled our courses to run smoothly.

Looking ahead, I will continue to promote cross-disciplinary service-learning projects that weave together technology and local humanistic values. I remain committed to guiding students in building deeper connections with local communities, enriching my teaching through service, and upholding the core mission of holistic education through design.
