Hsu,Shih-Che

“Understanding the obstacles faced by the different generations is still a tough task even with empathy, as it is really difficult to truly grasp the challenges within.” Professor Hsu indicated that as a mentor, what we can do is try to understand the students’ behaviors as much as possible, as well as do our best to think in their shoes in order to earn their trust.

Create a Relaxed Atmosphere to come Closer to the Students

Since Professor Hsu is also the head of the Counseling Team for the Office of International and Cross-Strait Education, he often encourages the trainees to participate in the various international activities organized by the Office of International and Cross-Strait Education, thereby increasing the opportunities to interact with the students. Amongst these, one particular event left a deep impression on Professor Hsu, which was the winter ski trip on a snowy day. As a person who loves to ski, Professor Hsu joined Professor In-Koo Kang from Korea, taking the students to Korea to learn this sport through collaborations with Korean universities. Through this opportunity, Professor Hsu was able to know his trainees better and become closer to them while skiing.

Moreover, other than the mentorship sessions, Professor Hsu also utilizes “group dinners” as a way to get to know his trainees, where he created a more relaxed and harmonious environment for the students to freely express themselves, thus bringing himself closer to the students. “Once a friendly atmosphere has been established, students who are troubled by emotions or academic issues will then be more willing to open up and seek assistance.” Professor Hsu shared that there once was a trainee whose aspiration was to become a scientist. However, what electrical engineering emphasizes is the integration of theory and practice, therefore, students who carry theory over practice will find it difficult to adapt to practical courses within the department. At such times, you must actively listen, accompany and try to assist the student overcome the obstacles after understanding the student’s aspirations. “Listen to the students recount their experiences of encountering obstacles with empathy and learn about their needs from this.” He stressed.

Trust is the First Step Leading to the Retrospection on the “Golden Mean”

“I am a teacher and the role of a teacher exists because of the students. Therefore, when the students encounter problems, it is even more important that we do our best to find the solutions.” Keeping such a mindset as a mentor, although he gradually earned the trust of students, Professor Hsu still felt it was not enough and often pondered on how to do things right. “It is like running while holding an egg, where you are scared that squeezing it too hard you might break it, but worrying that you might drop it if holding it too loosely.” Professor Hsu described with a serious attitude even though the tone sounded light-hearted.

Professor Hsu believes that careful consideration is required to balance the level of care placed on the trainees without causing pressure on them. Therefore, he constantly reviews his interactions with the students, for instance, did the tone of guiding the students sound admonishing or preaching? Was he excessively concerned about the students, or gave too much advice…etc. “It is without doubt that we as teachers are filled with passion, but communicating with the students requires giving them appropriate respect and space for thinking.” Professor Hsu, who often reminds himself that overdone is worse than undone, mentioned that gaining the trust of the students is the first step. However, without regular retrospection, excessive concerns may be counterproductive.

Success is Fully Developing Individual Potentials

In conclusion, Professor Hsu sincerely hopes that the students can be more confident in themselves, “Everyone encounters good and bad times and being trapped in the low point does not mean that there is no opportunity to overcome the obstacles in the future.” It is hoped that students who are faced with setbacks in their studies, mental health, or job search can maintain a positive and active attitude, as the hard work will eventually be recognized. The students are anticipated to be confident with the ability to think independently and be brave to express as well as show their thoughts. “You do not need to follow the crowd, but you have to know what you like, and where your passion lies.” Professor Hsu always believed that since humans have infinite potential, one would be successful once developing own potential after learning more about oneself.
