Biotechnology Program
INTRODUCTION

Introduction

The International Program of Biotechnology of Graduate Courses was set up in 2007 in Department of Bioscience Technology at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU).
The Department of Bioscience Technology was established in 2002, and was the latest department of the College of Science in CYCU. In 2003, the Masters Degree Course were established as one of graduated course in the Department of Chemistry. The Department had 110 graduate students, and 13 students graduated from the master class up to 2007. At present, we offer 15 qualified graduated students each year and will increase to 20 in the future.
The Biotechnology building has finished on Sep, 2006 located inside Chung Yuan University campus. The Bioscience Technology department staffs’ laboratories located at 5th and 6th floor. Each staff has one PI office, one student office and an individual laboratory about 100 m2 space for essential equipments, such as cell culture facility, DNA, RNA and protein assay systems for molecular Biology, Biochemistry and cell Biology experiments. There are over 300 m2 spaces for core facilities. Currently, we have real time PCR, ultrahigh speed centrifuges, Spectrophotometer, fluorescence microscope, confocal microscopes, ELISA reader, FPLC, CCD gel image system, spectrofluorometer, calcium image system, microinjection and a zebra fish stock room. The mutual cooperation between our staffs are great advantage in our department. And, we also have animal rooms at 8th floor.
The Department of Bioscience Technology at CYCU has highly-appraised atmosphere of academic research and outstanding academic achievements. There are 9 full-time faculties, including 2 professors, 2 associate professors and 5 assistant professors in our department. The department receives R&D fundings of about NT$15,000,000 every year. The expert fields of our professors cover: (1) stem cell research; (2) Biotech health foods; (3) recombinant proteins production and (4) Bioinformatics. In addition, the Bioscience Technology department also has alliance with VIA cord blood stem foundation. VIA cord blood stem Foundation was found by VIA Technologies, Inc. Taiwan and aims to collect the cord blood stem cells. Foundation has Flow cytometer, Blood culture system, and Robotic liquid nitrogen storage systems. The new laboratory of foundation will be the 7th floor of Biotechnology building and occupy about 660 m2. There are three areas of the new laboratories. One for seminar and presentation room, the second and third areas will assign to be cellular Biology and/or epigenetic studies. VIA cord blood Stem Foundation had already garrisoned in our department and purchased the latest instruments for stem cell research. So the teachers and graduate students of this department can participate in the research works in this foundation directly.
In addition to professional Biotechnology training, the department also aims at training students to be intellectually, morally, professionally, and socially capacitated in the field of Biotechnology, and also devoting its resources to academic research with the aim of serving the nation and society, and promoting the health of human beings. In terms of teaching, the Department of Bioscience Technology strives to balance both theory and practice, develop independent thinking, innovation, and problem solving ability.

Program Duration & Degree Offered

It is a policy that the duration for the M.S. program is from 1 year to 3 years. Students, who have successfully completed and passed 30 credits of courses (including 6 credits of Master Thesis) and oral defense for thesis within the stipulated time period, shall receive the M.S. Degree of Biotechnology Program conferred by Department of Bioscience Technology, Chung Yuan Christian University.
